Build and Handling Quality

Even though this lens is unassuming in appearance, the enormous glass front element is stunning. This lens boasts a solid weight for its size and feels wonderful in the hand thanks to that design feature.

The exterior barrel, with the exception of the aperture ring, is made of high-quality plastic. It’s also composed of plastic and has functioned well for me, but I’m not ready to give the aperture ring the “high quality” title yet. The rubber-coated focus ring consumes most of the lens barrel outside of the aperture ring. Autofocus Performance

The focus ring is smooth, very well-damped, and free of play. Focus distances on the focus ring (both ft and m) are marked. The MFD (Minimum Focus Distance) and most-infinite focusing distances are hard stops, making the focus setting marks repeatable. Subjects change in size gradually as they move down the focus length range; nevertheless, the focus ring must be rotated significantly to achieve a significant shift.


The Samyang 14mm lens is sharp at f/11, but lacks contrast. Some details are lost in the image because of this lack of contrast, especially noticeable on high-contrast subjects such as foliage against a bright sky. Distortions / Aberrations

Vignetting is not a problem and there’s no need to correct color fringing at any aperture because Samyang lenses do not contain such aberration when used with high resolution sensors, even when wide open.

There’s seldom a time when I want something softer, and in those few situations, I can almost always achieve it by using an aperture narrow enough to exhibit diffraction.

The Samyang 14 is quite sharp in the center at f/2.8 and has excellent sharpness across the entire full frame sensor image circle at this wide open aperture, with only slight softness in the corners. The complete frame corners are just a little soft, but they’re still fantastic for a lens of this width. If sagittal (like bicycle spoke) and meridional (perpendicular to sagittal) lines were equally sharp, the corner outcomes would be incredible.


Bokeh is the Samyang 14mm’s strong suit: it has a very smooth and soft appearance. The Samyang lens only uses aspherical elements, which assist in controlling spherical aberrations. The Samyung 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC is a surprisingly nice lens. For an insanely low price of around $330, the Samyung 14mm lens delivers excellent sharpness, good chromatic aberration control, and sturdy build quality. Due to the lack of autofocus and a very wide depth of field, focusing the lens without using Live View is a little more difficult.

The Samyung is a somewhat unique lens in that it has a user-removable mount. This means you may theoretically switch between several systems without having to buy entirely new lenses, as long as the hardware is compatible. The overall construction quality and build seems to be quite good, though there are some minor issues with barrel distortion and corner softness. Given that the competing lenses cost around 5-9 times more and would require additional purchases if not for weather sealing or autofocus, the Samyung is a great deal for anyone looking to try out one of their lenses.
