When you look through the viewfinder of a DSLR, you are actually seeing a reflection of the scene in front of you that is being bounced off of a mirror inside the camera. The mirror then directs this image to a prism, which projects it onto your camera’s focusing screen.
Once you press the shutter button, the mirror swings up out of the way and allows light from the scene to reach directly onto the image sensor. The image sensor then captures the scene and turns it into a digital image.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV
The E-M10 series has always been a great value, but the Mark IV version is even better with its 20MP sensor, improved in-body image stabilization and new flip-down and tiltable monitor. It also retains the 4K video and attractive styling that made the Mark III so popular. So if you’re looking for an entry-level camera that can do just about everything, this is the perfect one for you.
The E-M10 series has long been our favorite tiny cameras, so we’re really happy that the Mark IV AT LAST received Olympus’s newest 20MP sensor. Even better, it’s one of the most affordable mirrorless cameras on the market right now, which is quite remarkable considering what it can perform.
Fujifilm X-T4
The X-T4 was the final model in Fujifilm’s X-mount camera line until the Fujifilm X-H2S, but we have yet to put it through its paces, so for us the X-T4 is still the best pro APS-C mirrorless camera.
The X-T4 sports in-body stabilization, a vari-angle touchscreen display, and a fast burst mode. Of course, the X-T4 isn’t simply a still photography camera. It also has 4K video performance that is cutting edge, with 60p 10-bit internal recording. It’s a shame Fujifilm discontinued the headphone jack (you’ll need an adaptor now). The sole issue keeping this camera from climbing higher on our list is its price; it has remained high and is only slightly less than some excellent full frame competitors.
Nikon Z9
The Nikon Z9 was definitely worth the wait, as it is an absolute beast of a camera when compared to other top-spec mirrorless cameras. It’s particularly good for video, trumping the Canon EOS R3.
The Z9 is equipped for 8K 60p video recording or 8K 30p with a camcorder-like 2-hour record limit. Nikon opted to do away with the mechanical shutter completely, which allows for 120fps continuous shooting and 1/32,000 max shutter speed– perfect for sports and bird photography enthusiasts.
The Z9 is powered by Deep Learning AF, making it able to recognize nine subjects: human eyes, faces, heads and upper bodies; animal eyes, heads and bodies; cars, planes, trains and motorbikes. With 493 AF points- the same as the Nikon Z7 II- The Z9 seems impressive until you research the Canon EOS R3 with 4779AF points. Significantly cheaper than both The Sony A1 and the Canon EOS R3 ,The Z9 has a lot of features that put it ahead of its competition.
Sony A1
Technology lovers rejoice–the Sony A1 is all that it’s cracked up to be. This camera isn’t like the others, which might excel in speed, resolution or video quality. The A1 does all three of those things better than any other camera on the market, including sports and video cameras designed for specific purposes.
The A1 is a great camera, but the price will continue to be a major issue. Additionally, its only appeal is to photographers who need everything it does–not just one or two features. Finally, Sony has virtually killed off sales for two of its other cameras by releasing this one! The Sony A9 Mark II was a terrific camera for sports photography but lost out to the A1; similarly, the Sony A7S Mark III’s excellent 4K video capabilities cannot compete with the 8K capture offered by the A1.
Choosing The Right Mirrorless Camera For You
When choosing a mirrorless camera, it is important to consider what you will be using it for. If you need a camera that excels in video, the Sony A99 or Nikon Z90 might be a good choice. If you are looking for a cheaper option that still performs well, the Olympus OM-D E-M100 Mark III is a great entry-level mirrorless camera.
